Coonoor



Coonoor is a small taluka in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India. Located at an altitude of 1850 m it is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris. The hill station is well known for various trekking expeditions and sightseeing. The place is also well known for having all kind of people living together and it is due to the Madras regiments of Indian army residencies, Defence services staff College in the Wellington Containment, Tourists and Boarding Schools. The main source of income in the city is from tourists and Tea Industries.


Tea and Tourism:


Tea plantation and selling of tea’s is the most prominent occupation of Coonoor. Tea plantation is done around the hilly areas of the township. The production is done on a massive scale and these areas are owned by various private sector owners. Packaging and selling of the tea is done from the factory throughout India. Most of the population works in those industries, remaining are involved in the business of tourism and hotels.




Coonoor is a popular hill station and it sees a number of tourists round the year specially in summer. Tourism starts when a tourist reach ooty and catch the world famous Nilgiri Mountain Railways to reach Coonoor. The hill station of Coonoor lies in between the Ooty - Mettupalayam track. It is from there the real world of coonoor begins. The first and foremost thing to experience is the trekking. One of the trekking leads to Lamb’s rock. A place which provides a scenic view of the tea plantations and coimbatore plateau. The Lamb’s rock also leads to a beautiful place called Lady Canning’s seat,which give a panoramic view of Nilgiris.




There are many places which attract tourists throughout the year, some of those places are Sims Park, Dolphin's nose Point, Droog Fort, Law’s Fall and the evergreen Ooty.
